New Umpire Development Pathway & Structure launched

Hockey SA are excited to announce our Umpire Development Pathway to be implemented heading into the 2022 Winter Season. This pathway recognises the importance that officials play in maintaining strong competitions and the sport. With the new structure, there is a defined pathway for talented umpires within South Australian Hockey to work their way up the ranks towards National Championships, Hockey One and potentially international appointments.

Development Roles
South Australian Umpire Development Committee
This Committee Includes members from the Performance & Zone space, the Hockey SA Officials Roster Manager and Hockey SA Staff. The Committee will make informed decisions around umpire development within South Australia.
Performance Umpire Developer
The role of the Performance Umpire Developer (PUD) is to provide strategic advice and operational support to Hockey South Australia staff in the recruitment, identification, development and retention of Umpires, Performance Umpire Coaches & Zone Umpire Developers.

Performance Umpire Coach
Individuals who will assist the Performance Umpire Developer in physically providing coaching to our performance umpires and Zone Umpire Developers.

Zone Umpire Developer
The role of the ZUD is to assist HSA in the identification, development, mentorship, and retention of umpires throughout the course of 2022, primarily through the Talented Umpire Development Pathway. The zones that will be managed by the ZUD’s will align with the zone structure from the Junior State Championships.

Club Umpire Developer
Responsible for the recruitment and initial training/mentorship of South Australia’s umpires within their own club or association. They will work with the Zone Umpire Developers in identifying potential candidates for the Talented Umpire Development Program.
Hockey SA Officials Roster Manager
The Hockey SA Roster Manager will work with the SAUDC and Hockey SA stuff to streamline the process of appointing officials to Hockey SA allocated matches.
Pathways and Programs
Performance Umpires
High Performing Premier League & Nationally recognised umpires.
Hockey SA Panel Umpires
Hockey SA Panel Umpires are the pool of umpires that Hockey SA use to roster onto allocated matches for the Metropolitan Competition in PL, M1 and U18s.
Club Umpire
Club umpires are any umpires appointed by clubs for allocations that are not on the Hockey SA Panel.
Talented Umpire Development Program
This Program is dedicated to developing umpires, with the aim of progressing them to the Performance Umpire Panel standard. Approximately 20 Umpires will be selected into this program annually after nominations from Clubs and Associations through discussions with the SAUDC.
Hockey SA are opening Nominations for the Talented Umpire Development Program with nominations due by 28th February 2022. Nominations must be sent in by either Clubs or Associations and not individuals. Nominations are limited to 2 per club and 2 per Country Association.
