Hockey SA Umpire Development Pathway Update

Published Mon 15 Aug 2022

Earlier in the season Hockey SA announced the new umpire development pathway that was being implemented for the 2022 season and beyond.

HSA are excited to officially announce the people appointed to the roles for the 2022 season along with a bit more information about how they are helping implement the pathway.

Gary Belder – Performance Umpire Developer

The Performance Umpire Developer (PUD) helps provide strategic support to HSA to recruit, identify and retain Umpires, Performance umpire coaches and Zone Umpire Developers. The principal duty of the PUD is a hands-on role in the match-day coaching of all performance and panel umpires in South Australia, primarily supporting them through their national tournament preparations. In Collaboration with the Performance Umpire Coach, they are to provide regular, ongoing strategic advice to support all performance and upcoming umpires to reach their full potential.

Gary Szkolik – Performance Umpire Coach

The Performance Umpire Coach (PUC) helps provide support to the Performance Umpire Developer in the development and retention of umpires and Zone Umpire Developers. The principal duty of the PUC along with assisting the PUD is to assist and develop the Zone Umpire Developers.

Sarah Stroeher – Officials Roster Manager

The Officials Roster Manager supports HSA staff in helping facilitate the weekly appointment of Panel Officials to PL, M1 and U18S fixtures. The Officials Roster Manager works closely with the PUD and PUC to help facilitate the development of umpires that are in the Performance umpire pathway and their preparation for National Tournaments.

Zone Umpire Developers

The Zone Umpire Developers (ZUD) work with the clubs in their zones to recruit, develop and identify umpires that have the potential to be part of either the umpiring panel or the Performance Umpire Pathway.
The principal duty of the ZUD’s is to work with Club Umpire Developers to identify umpires to be selected for the Talented Umpire Development Pathway and then to deliver the content for this pathway and help facilitate their growth towards the umpiring Panel and Performance Umpire Pathway.
