2024 Adelaide Fire squads announced

Published Tue 27 Aug 2024

The Adelaide Fire is ready to fire up for Season 4 of the Hockey One League.

The Adelaide Fire are pleased to announce the men’s and women’s squads, for Season 4 of the Hockey One League.

The women’s squad welcome the inclusion of some top international talent. Margot van Geffen, the number three in the Dutch all-time rankings for international matches played with 265 international caps, and three-time Olympian, will bring a big presence to our lineup. Power midfielder with 122 international caps for England and Great Britain, and two-time Olympian, Shona McCallin, will bring a wealth of international experience and a significant presence to the midfield. Dutch midfielder, Julia van den Heuvel, brings another level of international experience to the women’s squad. New Zealand Black Sticks defender, Casey Crowley, joins the Fire women to bolster the backline this season.

South Australia’s favourite Hockeyroos will make a welcomed return to the Fire women’s team. Following her recent Olympic debut, dynamic defender Hattie Shand, will return to dominate the women’s backline. Off the back of a standout first season for the Hockeyroos, Lucy Sharman, also returns home for the Fire season.

The women’s squad will also see a wealth of local SA talent included in the lineup including seasoned Hockey One campaigner, Miki Spano, who will return from WA.

The women’s squad sees the youthful inclusion of local emerging talent in Chloe Holland, Katie Sharkey, Zara Pelham and Puck de Beijer.

“I am excited to be leading the Adelaide Fire women’s team for the upcoming Hockey One Season. The list is very strong and combines the best of local available talent, handpicked interstate key players and elite international stars (including our home grown Hockeyroos). The blend of diverse skills and experiences will provide us the ability to play some exciting Hockey and should make the Adelaide Fire one of the teams to watch in 2024.” – Mark Victory, Adelaide Fire Women’s Head Coach.

Local hero, Jane Claxton, unfortunately comes out of the squad as she recovers from an injury sustained at the Paris Olympics.

The men’s squad also welcome an international contingent in 2024. Scott Cosslett, a strong defender with a powerful drag flick who hails from Auckland, having represented the New Zealand Black Sticks squad at the 2023-24 FIH Nations Cup. South African striker, Richard Pautz, brings plenty of skill to cut through any defence. Scoring 24 goals in his 39 international matches, he will be a strong presence up forward. South African 50 capped international, Daniel Sibbald, a speedy midfielder with the ability to create plays. Together, our internationals will create a significant presence in the men’s squad.

Experienced Hockey One players, Tom Brown and Landon Morley, will cross the border and join the Fire from NSW. Both players bring a wealth of skill and experience to the men’s squad.

Returning from Victoria are the Snowden brothers. Known to run rampant in the forward line, Hugh Snowden, and our very own brick wall, Jed Snowden, the master in goals. Jed features in the Hockey Australia Development Squad, along with experienced campaigner and SA native, Fred Gray, who will also rejoin the team after returning from WA.

Coming off two strong Hockey One seasons is local lad and fellow Development Squad representative, Jack Holland. Young gun, Lucas Toonen, is also set to return following another standout season in the local Premier League and his inclusion in this year’s Burra’s squad. Striker Angus Fry makes a welcomed return to the men’s squad, after spending a year abroad in 2023.

In line with the youthful inclusion of local emerging talent, and off the back of an impressive display at the recent Under 18 championships, Bryce Hammond, makes his way into the Fire men’s squad.

“I’m thrilled about the upcoming 2024 Hockey One season with the Adelaide Fire. Last year was full of great moments, and this year, even with a few challenges, I believe in the potential of our final squad. We have a dynamic mix of seasoned players and energetic young talent, and I’m confident this group will make a significant impact throughout the season. Our focus and determination are stronger than ever, and we’re ready to bring our best to every match.” – Jethro Eustice, Adelaide Fire Men’s Playing Head Coach.

Season 4 will see the Adelaide Fire host the season opener on Friday 11th October, taking on Hockey Club Melbourne under lights at MATE Stadium. The Fire will also host the Tassie Tigers on Sunday 27th October and NSW pride on Saturday 16th November.
